Floating Shelf Hardware: Threaded Rod System Rods vs. Floating Brackets — Which Is Right for You?

When it comes to installing floating shelves, choosing the right hardware is crucial for both aesthetics and functionality. At The Timber Line, we offer two primary installation methods: concealed metal rods (included with most of our shelves) and floating brackets (sold separately). Let's explore the differences to help you decide which option suits your needs.

🔩 Concealed Metal Rods (Included)

Overview:
Our standard installation method involves concealed metal rods that are inserted into the wall and slide into pre-drilled holes in the shelf. This method offers a clean, minimalist look with no visible hardware.

Benefits:

  • High Weight Capacity:
Each rod can support up to 25kg when secured into a timber stud, allowing a shelf with two rods to hold up to 50kg.

  • Custom Fit:
We cut the rods to match your shelf dimensions, ensuring a seamless fit.

  • Ease of Installation:
We can pre-drill holes into your shelf before shipping, making the installation process straightforward. Please request this when ordering by leaving a note on your shopping cart page, or email us.

Ideal For:

  • Timber stud walls

  • Brick or concrete walls

  • Installations requiring high weight capacity

🧱 Floating Brackets (Sold Separately)

Overview:
Floating brackets consist of a flat backplate with protruding prongs that fit into a channel (rebate) cut into the back of the shelf. This method is often used in steel-framed homes where concealed rods may not be suitable.

Considerations:

  • Rebating Required:
Shelves must be rebated to accommodate the bracket, which isn't done by default. This process should be carried out by a qualified installer, or we can do this for you. Please select "rebate" when purchasing.

  • Lower Weight Capacity:
Each bracket supports approximately 10kg, depending on wall type and fixings used.

Ideal For:

  • Steel-framed homes

  • Situations where concealed rods aren't feasible

🪚 What Is Rebating?

Definition:
Rebating involves cutting a channel or groove into the back of the shelf to allow the bracket to sit flush within the timber. This process is essential when using floating brackets to ensure a seamless installation.

Note:
Rebating is not performed by default. If you opt for floating brackets, your installer will need to rebate the shelf during installation.

🧠 Making the Right Choice
